Cantaloupe Listeria Injuries

Cantaloupe Listeria Injuries

There are few things people like more on a hot summer day than slicing open a cold cantaloupe and taking in its juicy goodness. Cantaloupes are usually delicious and full of vitamins and minerals the body needs to stay healthy. But sometimes, that fresh, juicy cantaloupe can contain something the body doesn’t need, such as an unhealthy dose of Listeria. And often, that Listeria bacteria is there because someone along the line was not careful in handling the fruit.

In 2012, a food producer issued a recall of more than 580 crates of cantaloupes in July, after random tests revealed that a number of the melons were contaminated with Listeria. While the FDA at the time reported that no one had become sick from that batch of cantaloupe,  they were reminded of a major Listeria outbreak due to cantaloupe the year before. In one of the largest single food poisoning outbreaks in U.S. history, cantaloupe traced to a single Colorado cantaloupe distributor made at least 147 people sick and led to at least 33 deaths over 25 states.

Exposure to Listeria can include fever, muscle aches, headaches, nausea and diarrhea, but it can also lead to loss of balance and convulsions. In most cases, the symptoms will go away after a few weeks, but small children, the elderly and those with impaired immune symptoms may develop more complications. Pregnant women are especially susceptible to illness from Listeria.

Listeria is usually found in foods that were grown with contaminated soil or manure, and were not properly cleaned or handled during processing. Cleaning a cantaloupe’s outer hull is not effective, because the Listeria bacteria can leech into the inside of the cantaloupe.

If you suspect that you or someone you know may have become sick from eating a cantaloupe that may have been contaminated with Listeria, especially if that cantaloupe was subject to recall, you need a lawyer with experience dealing with food poisoning cases. If a subsequent investigation confirms your suspicions, the victim or victims may be entitled to adequate compensation for any injuries and harm caused by exposure to the contaminated cantaloupe.
