Major Beef Recall: Almost 9 Million Pounds

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced a massive recall of nearly 9 million pounds of beef from Rancho Feeding Corporation, located in Petaluma, California. This recall is happening for a very disturbing reason.

According to the FSIS inspection report that led to the recall, Rancho Feeding “processed diseased and unsound animals and carried out these activities without the benefit or full benefit of federal inspection. Thus, the products are adulterated, because they are unsound, unwholesome or otherwise are unfit for human food and must be removed from commerce.”

While FSIS officials made a note to say that there have been no reported illnesses reported at this point, the products went to retailers and distribution centers throughout California, Texas, Illinois and Florida. At this point, it is unclear exactly which companies received them, or whether they were sold to supermarkets or restaurants in some form.

This recall is actually an expansion of a Jan. 13, 2014 recall of nearly 43,000 pounds of the company’s meat product. At the time, that recall only included products that had been produced on Jan. 8, 2014 and shipped to distribution centers in California. At the time, all the FSIS said was that the animals has not received a “full federal inspection.” Further investigation by the FSIS, however, revealed a bigger problem, so the company had recalled all of the same beef products produced and shipped between Jan. 1, 2013 and Jan.7, 2014.

Here is a list of the Rancho Feeding Corporation products that are affected by the recall:

  • “Beef Carcasses”
  • 30 and 60-lb. boxes of “Beef Liver”
  • 30-lb. boxes of “Beef Tongue”
  • 30-lb. boxes of “Beef Cheeks”
  • 20-lb. boxes of “Beef Oxtail”
  • 50-lb. boxes of “Beef Feet”
  • 50-lb. boxes of “Beef Hearts”
  • 60-lb. boxes of “Beef Tripe”
  • 60-lb. boxes of “Veal Trim”
  • 40-lb. boxes of “Veal Bones”

All of the boxes have “EST. 527” in the USDA mark of inspection and have a case code number of either “ON9O3” or “ON9O4.
