Loss of Control Prompts Chrysler Recall

Loss of Control Prompts Chrysler Recall: Nearly 300,000 Vehicles Considered for Recall due to Axle Defect

A defect with a component in the rear axle is forcing Chrysler to recall nearly 300,000 vehicles due to a danger that a driver could lose control of the vehicle. The defect can cause the rear axle to lock unexpectedly significantly increasing the chance of a crash.  The loss of control at highway speeds can have tragic consequences like long term debilitating injury and death.

The vehicles subject to the recall includes several models of full-size and midsize  Chrysler pickups and several models of SUVs. In all, a total of 278,222 2009-2012 Ram 1500 pickups, along with 2009-2011 Dodge Dakota pickups and 2009 Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango SUVs are included in the recall.

The recall of the pickup trucks is because of a missing adhesive patch that could result in the rear axle pinion coming loose, which could cause the axle to lock up and “cause a loss of vehicle control with little warning, increasing the likelihood of a crash.” In the press release announcing the recall, Chrysler said the problem is serious enough that it should not be ignored by owners.

The Ram pickup recall does not include the all-new model that debuted late last year – but the maker is still disappointed, because they’ve been trying hard to improve its reputation for quality and reliability. In the latest J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Survey, the Ram brand made the greatest gain of any brand, and the 2013 Dodge Ram was recently named North American Truck of the Year at the Detroit Auto Show, and it was named Motor Trend Truck of the Year.

Chrysler also said, in a separate announcement, that it will recall nearly 4,300 of their 2003 – 2004 Dodge Viper sports cars, due to a problem with a circuit board that could prevent the vehicle’s airbag from inflating properly. A recall of older Jeep Liberty and Jeep Grand Cherokee models was undertaken previously for a similar problem.

Dealers will make the appropriate repairs with both vehicles and affected owners will be notified directly in the weeks ahead. Customer can call Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753 for more information.

When a driver loses control at highway speeds, there is a high probability of an accident occurring.  These accidents can range from low speed accidents to high speed head on collisions and rollover accidents.  In all of these scenarios, drivers and passengers of the out of control vehicles, and others on the roadway, can be killed or otherwise injured for the rest of their lives.  Automobiles manufacturers must make their vehicles in a way that they do not endanger the health and safety of their consumers or others on the roadway.  If you have been in an accident involving an automotive defect, or you suspect and automotive defect, call the Texas Automobile Product Liability Lawyer at Hill Law Firm today.
