IKEA Child’s Swings Recalled

IKEA Child’s Swings Recalled Due to Fall Hazard

When a parent buys a toy for their child, it is not unreasonable to expect that the product has been tested and found to be safe before it is sold in a retail store. Unfortunately, that apparently isn’t always the case.  In the latest example, Swedish furniture maker IKEA has announced a voluntary recall of their GUNGGUNG child’s swing because of a defect in the suspension fittings, which can cause them to break and send the child tumbling from the swing, and cause serious injury.

The GUNGGUNG Swing is intended for indoor and outdoor use by children ages 3 to 7.  The swing is manufactured using green polyester fabric,  and the swing hangs from a plastic suspension fitting, which is then attached to steel hooks. The suspension strap, including the sling seat, is about 17 feet long, and the width of the seat is roughly 10 inches.

Attached to one of the suspension straps is a label containing information such as the IKEA logo, article number 302.439.74, supplier number 17915A, and a notice t the swing was manufactured in Vietnam. It also contains a note about the age recommendation, which is ages 3 to 7. The swings were sold at IKEA stores nationwide from April through August 2014 for $20 each.

To date, IKEA says there have been four reports of the suspension fittings breaking while the swing was in use. In one incident, a child fell from the swing and broke a leg.

As part of the recall, consumers who have the swings should immediately take them down and prevent your child from using them. Recall then instructs consumers to return the swing to the closest IKEA store for a full refund. Consumers do not have to bring proof of purchase into the store to get a full refund.

If you have one of these swings, you should follow the recall instructions carefully and return  it immediately to the closest IKEA store.
