Industrial Accident Kills Worker: Worker Crushed by Equipment
The Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is on the scene of a terrible industrial accident that happened on March 6 that took the life of Tyler, Texas resident and oil field worker James Croft, 43, at a site owned by Venture Chemicals. The site is situated several miles northeast of Seagraves, and a demolition crew from K&L Oil Field Demolition was removing numerous structures located on the site.
In a report after their investigation, the Terry County Sheriff’s Office described the death as “an unfortunate accident.” At the time of the accident, the work crew was attempting to carefully remove a silo tank, when the tank collapsed and fell before it was supposed to. When it did so, it landed on top of Croft and his equipment, killing him instantly. After Sherriff’s Office investigators did an analysis of the site and talked to other workers, they concluded that everyone on the crew had underestimated the weight of the tank, and it simply couldn’t hold up as long as they’d hoped.
OSHA is on site to conduct a thorough investigation from a workplace safety regulatory perspective, to find out if anything could have prevented this tragic accident.
Accidents can happen at any time at any construction or demolition site, but employers are absolutely obligated to every worker at every site to do everything possible to keep them all as safe as possible. Despite this, according to OSHA’s annual report, there were 4,383 on the job fatalities in 2012, with nearly one in five of those fatalities occurring at construction sites.
While federal and Texas state agencies have been charged with enforcing workplace safety rules, it is ultimately the company’s responsibility to keep workers safe. If they fail to do so, they could be considered negligent. If you or a loved one has been seriously injured or even killed on the job, you could very well be entitled to compensation if the employer can be proven negligent.
