Eagle Ford Worker Killed by Pipe

Eagle Ford Worker Killed by Pipe: BHP Worker Dies in Accident in Eagle Ford Shale

Oil and gas fields were always among the most dangerous workplaces in Texas and across the country, even before the current boom. In addition to the simple fact that they’re working around dangerous and explosive chemicals, workers in the industry also face a number of other pressures, including the need to produce a lot of oil quickly and cheaply. Too often, such pressure leads to compromises in safety that lead to tragedy.

On the morning of May 6, a contractor for oil field services company Jet Maintenance Inc. was working at the Eagle Ford Shale construction site in Karnes County, when a pipe fell and struck him on the head. First responders tried to administer CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to BHP Petroleum, who was operating the site, all operations were immediately halted at the exact location where the worker was killed, although drilling activity at the rest of the BHP Petroleum site continued. The company said it began to investigate immediately. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is also conducting an investigation.

This is not a new phenomenon. While Jet Maintenance has no record of accidents or enforcement inspections, according to OSHA, this makes at least a dozen drilling company workers and others who have died at the Eagle Ford Shale since 2009. Jet Maintenance’s main business is construction of roads, pipelines, ponds and pads for drilling rigs, which are all used in hydraulic fracturing (fracking) operations.

Accidents can happen at any workplace. But with the ongoing explosive growth in oil and gas production, everyone involved is under increased pressure to produce more and more, and that can increase the possibility of accidents. The details of this accident are still being investigated, and it’s not certain what occurred. But it is quite possible the worker was killed because the company took shortcuts in protecting its workers.
