Texas Holiday Roadway Safety: Be Careful During the Holidays

The 2013 holiday season has thus far seen a slew of accidents on Texas roads, once again demonstrating that the state’s highways are becoming more dangerous to navigate these days. Here are a few examples of the carnage on the roads just in the last week or so, according to records from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

In Guadalupe County, a 25-year-old woman pedestrian from New Braunfels was walking in the roadway near FM 725 and Zipp Road last week, when she was hit by a 1992 Toyota Camry heading eastbound on Zipp. The woman, Denali Molina, was taken to the San Antonio Military Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead just hours later. According to DPS, the driver who hit her, also from New Braunfels, has not been charged.

A few days later, DPS responded to a two-vehicle crash on TX-114 near the town of Smyer. The crash involved a 1999 Ford Ranger pickup and a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup, and resulted in the death of the driver of the F-150 and serious injuries to the driver and a passenger of the Ranger. According to DPS, the Ranger was westbound on TX-114, when the driver slid on ice and crossed the median into the eastbound traffic lanes and hit the F-150. The Ranger caught fire, but the driver and the passenger were pulled from the wreckage by witnesses, and were subsequently transported to Covenant hospital with minor to moderate injuries. All three occupants of both vehicles were wearing seatbelts.

A few days after that, Kilgore Police responded to a traffic accident at the intersection of State Highway 135 and Goforth Road that left one dead and two with serious injuries. According to the initial investigation, an SUV was going south on SH135, when it struck a car that had turned into the intersection from westbound Goforth.  The SUV had a driver and a passenger, while the car only had a driver.

Emergency responders tried to revive the passenger of the SUV, but she was transported to a local hospital, where she eventually died from her injuries. Kilgore Police and DPS are continuing to investigate the crash.

These terrible accidents have absolutely negatively impacted the lives of several families. The details of all of these accidents have to be investigated, and investigators will have to ask a lot of questions, especially with regard to road conditions, possible impairment of the drivers, and even the conditions of all vehicles involved in the accidents, since it’s possible one or more of them were defective. It will also have to be determine who is at fault, and to what level.
