Air Purifiers Recalled

Air Purifiers Recalled for Possible Fire Risk

Consumers buy air purifiers with the intent of removing particles, dust and allergens from indoor air in their office or home, not to create a fire hazard that could make their health and safety at risk. Therefore, a recent recall seems to be quite disturbing.

According to an joint announcement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada, Japanese manufacturer Daikin Industries Ltd has issued a voluntary recall in both the United States and Canada for a number of its air purifiers because a circuit board on the machines can overheat. When that happens, it’s possible for the purifier to catch on fire.

This recall is for Daikin Streamer Brand Air Purifiers with model number MC75KSU air purifiers. These portable air purifiers  are off-white in color, measure about 23 inches tall by 15 inches wide by 8 inches deep, and they weigh approximately 18 pounds.  The name of the manufacturer, “Daikin” is clearly displayed on the front of the units, while the model number appears on the rating plate, which is located on the lower right side of each purifier.

These air purifiers, which were made in China, were sold to consumers between December 2010 and October 2014 by a number of HVAC contractors, as well as Goodman Manufacturing Co. of Houston, Texas at a list price of around $540. They were also available online through Amazon.

Daiken is requesting that anyone with one of these air purifiers unplug the unit immediately and contact Daiken toll-free at (888) 770-7156 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, to register for participation in the recall, and receive either a full replacement purifier or a refund of up to $540. Consumers may also contact their contractor or Goodman Manufacturing to return the air purifier to Daiken at no cost to the consumer.

If you or someone you know has one of these air purifiers, follow the instructions of the recall and unplug it immediately. Then contact either the company or your contractor to return it. If you know someone who has been injured or killed in a fire started by any sort of defective consumer product, please contact the experienced and knowledgeable Consumer Product Safety Attorney at Hill Law Firm as soon as possible, so that we can protect your rights.
