A fiery crash earlier this week on Texas 21 left one man dead and several others injured when the driver of a 2009 Dodge Ram pickup truck slammed into a 2002 Dodge Ram pickup truck when the 2002 vehicle slowed down to make a right turn into a church, and the 2009 vehicle slammed into it at a high rate of speed.
According to witnesses, the 22-year-old driver of the 2002 pickup, which was green and black, was traveling eastbound and slowed to turn right into the Brazos Valley Cowboy Church. At the time, he had two passengers. It was then that the 26-year-old driver of the 2009 pickup truck, which had four passengers, including two women, who were 23 and 25, and two children, who are three and eight years old. The impact resulted in fire, and before first responders arrived, several passersby were able to put out the fire.
When emergency personnel arrived, including Texas state troopers, the Brazos County Sheriff’s Department and Bryan Fire Department, they shut down parts of the highway as they tried to free the driver of the 2002 pickup, and one of his two passengers, a 45-year-old man from El Salvador. The passenger died after being transported by helicopter to St. Joseph hospital in Bryan, while the driver was also injured, and was released the next day. The other passenger, a 43-year-old man, was not injured. Four of the five people in the 2009 pickup were also injured, and taken to the hospital. Who was injured, and the extent of their injuries, is unknown at this time
According to preliminary police reports, the driver of the 2009 picked up told state troopers he hadn’t been paying close attention, but he believed the rear lights on the other pickup have been covered up and were not visible. Police noted that the 2002 pickup at a dark lens on the back, which may have impeded the ability to see the turn signal and brake lights, and that they will be examining that further.
