Toro Riding Mower Recall

Toro Riding Mower Recall: Potential Fire Hazard Prompts Action

The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Bloomington, MN based Toro Co. have announced an expanded recall of 2012 and 2013 Toro Z Master Commercial 2000 Series ZRT riding lawn mowers because of a serious defect that could cause the mowers to catch fire. Back in November 2012, the company had recalled 2,630 units, but with this announcement, the number of affected mowers has been expanded to cover 3,760.

The defect that led to the recall is a metal idler pulley, which can rub against the mower’s gas tank, thus creating a potential fire hazard. To date, Toro has received six reports of mowers catching fire, although it has not yet received a report of an injury.

The mowers involved in the recall are black and red, and were sold by Toro dealers in the United States and Canada between Jan. 2012 and April 2013. The mowers feature the phrases “Toro 2000 Series” on the side and “Z Master Commercial” on the front. The model numbers and serial numbers included with this recall are as follows:

  • Model Number 74141, including a range of serial numbers from 312000101 to 312000784 and 313000101 to 313000364
  • Model Number 74143, including a range of serial numbers from 312000101 to 312000881 and 313000101 to 313000432
  • Model Number 74145, including a range of serial numbers from 312000101 to 312001178 and 313000101 to 313000443

The recall notice, which has already been sent to all registered owners of the mowers, advises those who own the lawn mowers to contact a Toro dealer to find out if the repair has already been made, or to schedule a free repair. Consumers can call Toro toll-free at (855) 493-0090, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or find Product Recall information at www.toro.com.
