Dallas Charter Bus Accident:Â Senior Citizen Charter Bus Rolls Over in Irvine; Leaves 2 Dead, 40 Injured
At about 9 this morning, two people were killed and more than three dozen injured, when a private charter bus overturned in Dallas. The bus, which was carrying 45 passengers, all senior citizens ranging in age from 66 to 80 years old, was on its way from Dallas to a casino in Oklahoma.
According to initial reports from the scene, the bus was travelling north in the right lane on Texas Highway 161 near Belt Line Road, when it suddenly swerved to the right side of the road, hitting a rubber attenuator. The bus then swerved back across the highway and onto the grass median, where it left massive skid marks, then actually rode on top of a concrete barrier for a short distance, before it overturned onto its right side. Unfortunately, all emergency exits were on the right side of the bus, while passers-by were able to get a few passengers out of the escape hatch on the roof of the bus, a number of passengers were trapped until emergency crews arrived.
When Department of Public Safety officers, Irving Fire Department firefighters and EMS crews and the Dallas County medical examiner’s office arrived, they worked to free the trapped passengers. In all, two passengers were confirmed dead and at least 40 were injured. Those injured passengers capable of walking were loaded onto a DART bus for transport to Baylor Irving Hospital. Others were transported by ambulance to Baylor Irving, Parkland Memorial Hospital, Methodist Hospital and Las Colinas Medical Center.
